Would you like the opportunity to work for a leading youth mental health organisation? Cornerstone Youth Services is seeking a Mental health clinician to join their multi-disciplinary team.

The Position

The successful applicant will become a key staff member within the CYS team and will work closely with staff in the CYS primary care team (General Practitioners, Psychologists, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Youth Health Nurses, Youth Workers) and a range of government and non-government service providers.

Other key relationships include other service providers, school communities and collocated services.

The Mental Health Clinician will:

1. Engage young people and conduct biopsychosocial assessment and the initial screening of young people referred to or who access CYS, according to the CYS policies and procedures.

2. Provide clinical supervision services to Psychologists employed with headspace, and Psychology students in placement with the service

3. Identify young people who require assistance with mental health problems, substance use problems, education, training or employment and/or, other care or service needs.

4. Support the implementation and on-going development of the headspace primary mental health assessment, intervention, and referral protocols by:

5. Document results of assessment and screening, and present cases for review in conjunction with other headspace team members.

6. Maintain required activity records for monitoring and evaluation of headspace.

7. Participate in and contribute to team meetings, training and planning activities, service evaluation and clinical governance activities including data collection, supervision, file auditing, performance management etc.

8. Prepare recommendations, reports and proposals as necessary to meet Cornerstone and headspace requirements.


  • Degree in Nursing, Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy.
  • Full AHPRA registration as a Psychologist, Clinical Psychologist, Occupational Therapist or Mental Health Nurse, OR
  • AASW registration as an Accredited Social Worker.


  • Post graduate qualifications and/or previous experience working in the mental health sector

Selection Criteria:

  1. 1. Knowledge and understanding of the evidence-based interventions and clinical theories and practices of youth mental health and drug and alcohol intervention, as well as demonstrated excellence in the practical application of such; including experience in delivering a range of contemporary, evidenced counselling frameworks, clinical case management, with an assertive outreach approach and secondary consultation.

2. Demonstrated knowledge of issues of clinical risk including self-harm, suicide and violence risk, and a demonstrated ability to deliver appropriate risk assessments and appropriate, clinically-indicated response to risk.

3. Demonstrated knowledge of health and social issues experienced by young people, the determinants of health outcomes, and the evidence-based ways of engaging with these issues.

4. Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver group based skills, education and/or support-based activities to assist a young person’s psychosocial functioning and to inform other community agencies working with disengaged youth.

5. Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development as well as an understanding of clinical governance and ability and willingness to undertake clinical governance tasks including professional supervision, case review, quality auditing, compliance with internal and external policies, and continuous improvement activities.

6. Highly developed communication (including written) and interpersonal skills, and the ability to engage with young people, advocate on their behalf and establish and maintain effective relationships with staff, young people families/carers and stakeholders.

7. Initiative and the ability to be self-directed and to work with minimal supervision and manage time effectively.

8. Proven ability to build and establish partnerships with outside organisations.

The Organisation

Cornerstone Youth Services Inc. (CYS) delivers a broad range of services to our community of young people aged 12 to 25 in North and North-West Tasmania. They focus on health promotion, prevention, education, early intervention and developing help-seeking behaviours.

Their services to young people include access to ‘no charge’ GP's, Youth Health Nurses, Drug & Alcohol, Social and Youth Workers and Allied Health. We also provide individual and group support and activities; school programs; advocacy to access many other services to improve general or specific health and well-being.
