Northern Midlands Medical Services

Location: Northern Tasmania       Occupation: General Practitioner       Title Description: GP/VMO       Position Type: Full Time
DPA: Yes       MMM: 2       Moratorium Period: 9 Years

Are you a GP considering a move to Tasmania, looking for an established team committed to providing high-quality care? How does having a variety of work locations, patients, a supportive team and the option to be involved in teaching the next wave of GP trainees sound? Northern Midlands Medical Service currently has a position available offering all the above, and more.

The Position

Northern Midlands Medical Service is seeking a full-time (4 days a week) VR GP or Rural Generalist to join the practice and work across its three sites at Longford (MMM2), Perth (MMM2) and Campbell Town (MMM5). Enquiries are also welcome from GPs looking for part-time work.

The Longford practice is open Monday to Friday 8am-6pm and Saturday mornings 8am-12noon. Saturday work is shared on a roster system, usually requiring doctors to work one Saturday morning every six to eight weeks. Aside from rostered Saturday mornings, there is currently no other after hours requirement with after hours calls triaged by GP Assist and at Campbell Town by the hospital. The practices in Perth and Campbell Town are open Mondays to Fridays between 9am and 5/5.30pm and closed on weekends.

The doctors also provide services to the local nursing homes at Longford and Perth, and at Campbell Town to the co-located residential aged care facility and district hospital. The new doctor will therefore need to become credentialled with Tasmanian Health Service to be able to provide VMO services at Campbell Town district hospital and, if required, at Toosey Memorial Hospital in Longford.

The Organisation

Northern Midlands Medical Services comprises three practices. Longford Medical Centre has been operating for over 40 years, with Perth Doctors Surgery operating for 25 years and relocated to new building in 2015, and Campbell Town Doctors Surgery being acquired in late 2020. The region has a fine colonial heritage, boasting rich pastoral landscapes surrounded by picturesque mountains to the east and west. Longford and Perth are peaceful rural towns just 15 minutes to Launceston and Campbell Town is on the Heritage Highway 45 minutes south of Launceston.

This long-established privately-owned practice provides health services to a population of approximately 12,500 people across the greater Northern Midlands community.

Currently there are 7 permanent doctors and 4 GP registrars, supported by 4 registered nurses, 3 enrolled nurses, Practice Manager, Office Manager and 9 receptionists.

All three practices are accredited by AGPAL and offer comprehensive general practice medical and nursing services, plus minor surgery, on a mixed billing model. The practices are fully computerised and well connected with each other by utilising modern IT and communication systems, Best Practice software and one practice database.

Specialist telehealth consultations are available from the Longford practice and other services include pathology, a neurologist, lung function testing, audiologist, and psychologist.

Northern Midlands Medical Services has a long history of providing medical education to Australian and international graduates and their sites are all accredited to train RACGP and ACRRM registrars. All three locations also host medical and nursing students.

What's on offer?

  • Competitive remuneration package based on a percentage of earnings plus superannuation and paid leave entitlements
  • Strong and supportive culture
  • DPA location (for those with a return of service obligation)
  • Eligible location (Campbell Town) for the HR+ Health Workforce Scholarship Program, which offers generous funding for health professionals seeking to extend their skills

Lifestyle in Northern Tasmania

With Launceston, Tasmania's second largest city located in this region, the Northern Region offers a lifestyle with world-class activities including premium cool-climate wines, some of the best mountain biking in the world, museums, art galleries, year-round events, heritage trails and much more. You are only minutes away from the Launceston Airport and close to beautiful coastline and rich farmland estates.

HR+ provide an invaluable service to Practice Managers in Tasmania. Jenny has acted as a mentoring support for me since I commenced at Don Medical Clinic in September 2018, and also supported me through networking events and education during my previous practice manager role in Hobart. Having a mentor like Jenny from HR+ has made a huge difference to me as I find my feet in the challenging world of practice management. I have found the support that HR+ provide, not only with mentoring but also the events put on by the Practice Support team, and the email support networking resources that are regularly provided, are invaluable and I am sure for many other practice managers in the state.
