Next stop Antarctica! Join the privileged few who have had the opportunity to work in Australia’s southernmost GP clinic – a fulfilling role in a pristine world-class setting where housing is affordable, the food superb and the air divine!
Huon Valley Council in southern Tasmania is seeking a VR GP to work at Dover Medical Centre in Dover. You can work solely at Dover, or you may wish to work part-time at Dover and also at Council's other practice, Geeveston Medical Centre in Geeveston. Council owns and operates both practices, which are the only ones in town.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a varied role working with a busy, friendly and supportive team. Use or develop your skills in comprehensive rural general practice covering a broad range of chronic and semi-chronic disease management, acute trauma, medical emergency care and surgical procedures, with admission rights to rural health beds.
The Huon Valley is a vibrant, semi-rural community in close proximity to Hobart with four principal townships and a population of more than 16,000. The region is a popular retreat for those seeking an alternative lifestyle.
One of Tasmania’s southernmost towns, Dover is a pretty fishing village with beaches, pastoral scenery and loads of fresh seafood and produce. An 80 minute drive south of Hobart, it is an ideal base for exploring the southwest Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Geeveston is 20 minutes back towards Hobart - a foodie’s paradise and the setting for the fictional Rosehaven television series.
Dover Medical Centre is located within the Esperance Multi Purpose Health Centre and is spacious and well appointed. The practice is open from Monday to Friday 8.30 am to 5.30 pm, with two doctors each working three days per week, a GP registrar, practice nurse and administration staff.
Geeveston Medical Centre is located in a restored heritage cottage with three consulting rooms and a separate treatment room providing a wide range of diagnostic and procedural equipment. Open from Monday to Friday 8.00 am to 6.00 pm, there are two doctors working four days each and administration staff.
Each practice is AGPAL accredited, provides a wide range of primary care services, including minor surgery and occupational medicine, and is fully computerised using Medical Director and PracSoft. The doctors do home visits and can admit to rural health beds at Huon Eldercare in Dover and Franklin to allow for the care of acute medical conditions and palliation. Ambulance services are located in Dover (volunteer only) and Huonville and the nearest A&E is in Hobart. Whilst patients’ after hours needs are triaged by Healthdirect, which minimises after hours call-outs, you will be required to participate in an after hours roster.
Huon Valley Council is committed to fostering medical education and each practice is an accredited training practice for RACGP registrars of all levels, senior ACRRM registrars, medical students and John Flynn placements.
Visiting services include a physiotherapist, sports physiologist, psychologist, mental health services, psychiatrist, dietitian, diabetes educator, podiatrist and audiologist.
The practices bulk bill pensioners, health care card holders and children under 16 years old, with all other patients billed privately.
