GP - Somerset Medical Centre

Somerset Medical Centre

Location: North West Tasmania       Occupation: General Practitioner       Title Description: GP       Position Type: Full Time, Permanent
DPA: Yes       MMM: 3       Moratorium Period: 7 years

This friendly privately owned practice in a small coastal town is expanding. If you’re into ocean and river fishing, you’ll want to hook this one!

The Position

Somerset Medical Centre is a privately owned general practice looking for two additional full-time GPs to increase service capacity. You will preferably be vocationally registered, however supervision is available if required for doctors with general registration on a GP training pathway.

The practice is open Monday to Friday from 8 am to 6 pm, with clinics on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays for four hours staffed on a roster basis. Whilst the new doctors will be required to participate in the after-hours on-call roster, the practice utilises the triage service GP Assist to minimise out-of-hours calls. You may also provide support to the two local aged care facilities and do home visits as required.

Skills and experience required:

  • Current AHPRA general or specialist registration
  • Previous GP experience preferred but not essential

The Organisation

Situated in north-western Tasmania on the estuary of the Cam River midway between the township of Wynyard (with airport access to Melbourne) and the city of Burnie (a 10 minute drive away), Somerset has a population of 4,000. The main employment in the local area is farming and light industry. The area is popular for both ocean and river fishing and the iconic Cradle Mountain is a mere 1.5 hour drive away.

Established in 1962, Somerset Medical Centre has grown over the years and is now housed in a modern building incorporating ten well equipped consulting rooms. The team consists of five general practitioners supported by two RNs and two ENs.

The practice offers a variety of family medicine services, including assessments and treatment for chronic health disease, ECGs, vaccinations, sexual and reproductive health services, telehealth consultations with mental health specialists, minor procedures, travel medicine and medical reports for occupational and private purposes.

Allied health services include physiotherapists, podiatrist, diabetes educator, dietitian, clinical psychologist, lung function service and an on-site pharmacy.

AGPAL accredited, the practice is fully computerised using Best Practice Clinical and Pracsoft and offers a mixed billing model.

What's on offer?

The practice is offering a competitive remuneration package of 60% or 65% of gross billings received, negotiable based on qualifications and experience (with guaranteed minimum earnings of $100,000 per annum based on working full-time).

You will receive in-house training and support and the location is also eligible for:

  • Workforce Incentive Payments
  • HR+ Health Workforce Scholarship Program, which offers generous funding for health professionals looking to extend the skills and services they can offer their community.
  • Comprehensive orientation program on arrival organised by HR+ and tailored to your needs.

Lifestyle in the North West

The North West region of Tasmania is famous worldwide for having some of the most beautiful natural places you can find in Australia. Live in safe and supportive communities close to beautiful coastlines, food trails and breathtaking national parks.

HR+ provide an invaluable service to Practice Managers in Tasmania. Jenny has acted as a mentoring support for me since I commenced at Don Medical Clinic in September 2018, and also supported me through networking events and education during my previous practice manager role in Hobart. Having a mentor like Jenny from HR+ has made a huge difference to me as I find my feet in the challenging world of practice management. I have found the support that HR+ provide, not only with mentoring but also the events put on by the Practice Support team, and the email support networking resources that are regularly provided, are invaluable and I am sure for many other practice managers in the state.
