The Organisation

Ochre Medical Centre Huonville is located in the picturesque Huon Valley, just 35 minutes south of Hobart. Known for producing world-class salmon and an ever-growing range of ciders, the Huon Valley is also host to festivals such as the Huon Valley Mid-Winter Festival and the Cygnet Folk Festival. The orchards and forests of the Huon valley lie next to the estuaries of the Southeast Coast, catering to a thriving fishing industry. The towns of the Huon are a haven for artisans, with cottage industries and boutique small farm ventures as well as an active live music scene making for a lively cultural hub.

The practice has AGPAL accreditation and offers a mixed billing model representative of the diverse population it services. There are 17 specialist General Practitioners, 1 GP Registrar, 6 Registered Nurses, a Nurse Practitioner, and various Allied Health Professionals including a Diabetes Educator, Psychologist, Social Worker, and one of the first in-practice non-dispensing Clinical Pharmacists. The team works across three sites: the main practice in Huonville and branch practices nearby in Cygnet and Bruny Island.

In addition, they are an accredited teaching practice for 2nd, 3rd and 5th-year medical students from the University of Tasmania and beyond, and GP Registrars from General Practice Training Tasmania, holding weekly clinical meetings for case discussion and a journal club to aid an ongoing evidence-based practice. They are the only practice in the south of Tasmania to host an intern from the Royal Hobart Hospital. They also support colleagues with general practice research projects through their partners, University of Wollongong and University of Tasmania.

Being situated in a rural area will allow you to put your full range of skills to use with the support of a great team of doctors, nurses, and receptionists. The practice offers a walk-in emergency service with nurse triage. It also provides nurse-led chronic disease and wound management, along with scope for you to perform skin cancer screening clinics and minor procedures from the purpose-built procedure rooms in Huonville and Cygnet. Technology is kept up to date and subscriptions to useful online resources are offered.

You will have the ability to admit patients to the rural health beds or see nursing home patients at Huon Eldercare, the residential aged care facility south of Huonville in Franklin. HVHC nurses support you there through health assessments and case conferences.

The practice uses Medical Director and Pracsoft software and has a website through which patients may book appointments.

Lifestyle in Southern Tasmania

With Hobart, Tasmania capital city located in this region, the Southern Region offers a lifestyle with world-class activities including museums, art galleries, year-round events, heritage trails and much more. You are only minutes away from Tasmania's largest airport and close to wineries, gourmet dining experiences, beautiful coastline and wilderness national parks.

HR+ provide an invaluable service to Practice Managers in Tasmania. Jenny has acted as a mentoring support for me since I commenced at Don Medical Clinic in September 2018, and also supported me through networking events and education during my previous practice manager role in Hobart. Having a mentor like Jenny from HR+ has made a huge difference to me as I find my feet in the challenging world of practice management. I have found the support that HR+ provide, not only with mentoring but also the events put on by the Practice Support team, and the email support networking resources that are regularly provided, are invaluable and I am sure for many other practice managers in the state.
