Managing Drug & Alcohol Problems in Primary Care

About the HR+ CPD Weekend

Hosted once a year (since 2018), The HR+ CPD Weekend is our leading event for GPs and GP Registrars. The event is very popular and spots are extremely sought out. HR+ has been hosting the HR+ CPD Weekend since 2006.

2019 Program Overview

Substance use is an increasing problem in our communities and may involve misuse of illicit and over the counter drugs, alcohol and other substances. Patients in rural areas often have difficulty accessing mainstream services and present to primary care for help with dependence. Patients can frequently have a range of problems encompassing physical health, mental health and social problems which can seem intractable.

This weekend seeks to improve GP’s knowledge and skills in identifying and managing drug and alcohol problems in the primary care setting. The modules will aim to improve confidence in managing presenting problems and discuss which patients are better managed in secondary care. There will also be advice in how GP’s may further improve their skills in this challenging but rewarding area of medicine.

Topics to be covered

  • Identifying substance dependence
  • Which substance-using patients can be managed in primary care?
  • Identifying and managing alcohol misuse
  • Opiate dependence – illicit and prescribed?
  • Managing ABC – amphetamines, benzodiazepines and cannabis.

A certificate will be supplied and this program can be registered as a Category 2 self-recorded activity.
